Who can be a Bandit?

Watford City Roller Derby league is made up of skaters, referees, non-skating officials and volunteers.

Women age 16 and over can join the Bakken Bandits as skaters for our team. We welcome both men and women over the age of 18 to be referees, coaches, officials and volunteers

Some of the other things we look for in a potential skater are:

  • A positive attitude

  • Excellent sportsmanship

  • Ability to listen and apply new knowledge

  • Time commitment

What type of commitment does being a Bandit require?

Time! Practice, meetings, fund-raising, bouts, promoting and planning for events can take a considerable time commitment. We are skater-owned and operated. That means all skaters vote on every major league decision and are invested in the success of WCRD. The only reason this league is successful is due to the dedication and efforts of every single skater to making things happen.

Every skater is required to attend a minimum of 50% of available practice sessions per month. Additionally, each skater is asked to get involved (on some measurable level) in the organizational aspects of the league. For example, those who are able to dedicate more of their time may find that they can take on the responsibilities of a committee head, while others can help the league by flyering or setting up at our events.

WCRD membership also requires some monetary commitment. Every skater is expected to pay monthly dues; this amount helps cover various training costs, such as renting a practice space. Dues are collected at the first practice of each month and payment programs may be available.

Upon first joining Watford City Roller Derby, skaters are asked to cover the cost of health insurance provided through the USARS. Despite any other policies you may hold, liabilities dictate that all skaters must be insured by a secondary insurance.

What kind of equipment is needed?

Every skater is required to wear a helmet, wrist guards, elbow pads, knee pads, a mouth guard and quad skates. Some optional equipment is also available such as shin guards, face shields and padded shorts. There are many outlets available such as sporting goods stores, online stores and skate shops. Contact us for a discount on skate packages, gear and accessories.

Whether you want to play competitive women’s flat track roller derby, support the sport by volunteering, or are looking for a different way to get in shape, Watford City Roller Derby is the place to be. Like any sport, roller derby requires aggression, endurance, teamwork, as well as mental and physical toughness — and that’s not all. We are a skater-owned and operated organization and that means we work hard on and off skates.
